Salford v Hull Big Match Preview

Image
Devil In The Detail SRD · Season tickets, Saints and start of season show Although this match is Salford’s home fixture it will once again be played behind closed. This coming weekend all the matches will be played at St.Helens.  The round one fixtures were very exciting with some really close games and plenty of thrilling tries scored. Catalans threw away a commanding lead against Hull Kingston Rovers but credit to the Robins they fought back brilliantly only to be denied in golden point extra time.  Leigh’s match against Wigan was a real game of two halves and the Wakefield v Leeds match another cracking contest. Salford were beaten by St.Helens on Friday night in the opening match 29-6. The score line doesn’t really tell the whole story.  With an hour on the clock Saints lead 13-6. Individual errors and a lack of composure cost Salford dearly. Saints like Salford looked a little clunky in the early stages and took a while to move through the gears. James Roby and Johnny Lomax cran

St Helens v Salford Match Report

As far as opening day matches go Salford had been handed the most daunting of them as they kicked off the 2021 season against Champions St.Helens. The Red Devils were in their mostly black away strip with Saints in their traditional white shirt with the red vee.  The Headingley pitch looked in immaculate condition and good enough to play bowls on. A nice wide playing surface for two sides who like to play attractive and attacking rugby. Richard Marshall’s Red Devils have worked a lot on their defence in the close season and tonight it would most certainly get tested. Salford were under the cosh straight away after Krisnan Inu came up with an error deep in his own half on the Red Devils first set with the ball. On the next set Saints made it count, Inu was caught out again under a high kick and Tommy Mackinson touched down right on the touch line. After Saints failed to make touch from a penalty, Salford applied the pressure with four repeat sets but failed to post any points.  A tea

Although this match will be played behind closed doors at Headingley it will count as an away match for Salford. The two sides met in the opening round of the 2020 season and after Saints’s epic Grand Final win over Wigan in November this looks another tough fixture. New Salford coach Richard Marshall knows all about the day to day goings on at Saints having worked along side Justin Holbrook and Kristian Woolf in two successful seasons with the Merseyside club. The bookmakers have Saints as the nailed on favourites to lift silverware once again in 2021 and looking at the strength and depth of their squad it would be hard to disagree. Kristian Woolf hasn’t really made whole sale changes but has brought in some real strong forwards from the NRL. Over the past few seasons a point has been made by many regarding the size of Salford’s squad. Looking on paper now the squad looks bigger and there does seem to be strength in depth in most positions which will give Richard Marshall options and

Despite spring not being to far off it was tricky wintry conditions for this pre season match at the AJ Bell Stadium. Although the rain had been persistent right up to kick off the pitch, as always looked in top condition. Salford coach Richard Marshall had picked a strong squad with most new players looking for a run out against last seasons Grand Final Runners up Wigan. The Warriors had John Bateman in their side after his return from the NRL. Looking at the team line ups both sides meant business.  Salford made an enterprising start forcing repeat sets from a smart kicking game but failed to post any points in the early stages.  Andy Ackers looked sharp playing at hooker and Danny Addy got through plenty of work in the pack.  Salford opened the scoring after a penalty was awarded. Tui Lolohea kicked through for Ken Sio who was pulled back. On the last tackle Kallum Watkins showed great composure and football skills to touchdown considering the very greasy playing surface. Devil In The Detail SRD · Sam Luckley pop up podcast It was quite difficult to gauge success and progress as the curtain came down on the 2020 season. All the teams felt the struggle and strain as the matches came thick and fast. For Salford it was a thrilling ride to Wembley but the bittersweet afternoon in the capital was hard to swallow with an agonising one point defeat to Leeds. Add to that the long suffering supporters being denied the chance to attend the match due to the global pandemic.  In the Super League Salford started slowly with defeats at home to Huddersfield, Leeds and Wakefield. Just before the country went into lockdown in March a fantastic comeback against Wigan at the AJ Bell Stadium to win 18-14 got the season back on track.  It was then a long wait for the next match in August, a thumping win over  Hull FC. Salford continued the season behind closed doors at neutral venues with some impressive performances. The final league table was settled on a percentage sys
