Salford Red Devil’s got back to winning ways with a hard fought victory against St Helens. Both sides were under strength due to injuries to Salford players and St Helens saving their players for their derby next week with Wigan but despite that it proved to be a cracking contest. Salford made plenty of errors in the 1st 30 minutes of the game but great defence and composure at big times in the game kept Salford in touch with St Helens. Pauli Pauli was Salford’s 1st try scorer of the evening showing he has that ability to run over players just like in the Challenge Cup final to score. With injuries hurting Ian Watsons squad this allowed Pauli to play big minutes in the game and remained dangerous throughout. He played his part in Salford’s winning try drawing the Saints defenders towards him then offloading to allow Salford to make space for Krisnan Inu to dive over in the corner much to the delight of the Salford fans watching at home. The bad news is the big man substained a shoulder

Salford v St Helens Match report

Playing St.Helens is a pretty stern test most times but backing up a couple of days after a bruising encounter with Wigan made tonight’s match even tougher for Salford. It was a showery afternoon in West Yorkshire with quite a heavy down pour an hour before kick off leaving the playing surface fairly greasy. Dan Sarginson returned to the Salford starting line up after his isolation period. Ed Chamberlain started in the centre and the only other significant change from last Friday’s match saw Connor Jones make the bench. St.Helens coach Kristian Woolf also made changes to his side handing debuts to five young players, Nico Rizzelli, Ben Davies and Tom Nisbett all in the starting thirteen. Matty Foster and Jake Wingfield made the bench. With the clocks changing yesterday their was a really winter feel to this match as we approach November. Saints got off to the perfect start. Young hooker Josh Eaves scoring after good build up play from Dom Peyroux. Salford struggled to complete sets ear

After a heavy defeat on Friday night Salford face another difficult task on Monday tea time backing up against the juggernaut of St.Helens. The current Super League Champions have been in blistering league form recently winning all ten matches since the season restarted in August. Their last Super League defeat came in March at Castleford. Ian Watson is an honest coach and never makes excuses. His side however were without eleven first choice players for the Wigan game and that’s hard going on a squad that’s not the biggest. With games coming thick and fast the next week or two are going to be extremely tough.  Salford have had moderate success in this fixture throughout the summer era with six memorable wins over the Saints. The 1997 fixture will go down as one of the most enjoyable. A game packed with incident and drama. Fast forward to 2016 and Salford thumped Saints at the AJ Bell Stadium 44-10 in one of those magical performances where everything seems to go perfectly. With Mark

Wigan v Salford Match Report

After the whole Wembley week and all the euphoria that came with the Challenge Cup Final Salford we’re back down to business with a League match against high flying Wigan. Ian Watson’s Red Devils face a tricky seven days with a match against St. Helens on Monday followed by Warrington a week today. Resources, resilience and the squad will no doubt be tested but Watson was focused on tonight’s task.  It doesn’t seem like the same season when the two sides last met, it’s that long ago. That was back in March at the AJ Bell Stadium. A thrilling Salford comeback secured an 18-14 victory. Kevin Brown scored the winning try that night but is now out for the rest of this season and is to under go surgery on his ankle. Chris Atkin has waited patiently this season and impressed every time he’s been in the side. With Brown now sidelined this could be the ideal time for Atkin to stamp his authority on the team working alongside a Tui Lolohea. Wigan are a tough side still smarting from their cup

Manchester United secured a good win in Paris on Tuesday against PSG to kick start their Champions League campaign. A retaken penalty by Bruno Fernandes put United in front in a solid 1st half performance by the Red Devil’s of Football. The 2nd half PSG put pressure on Man Utd with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar testing Man Utd’s defence. David De Gea was at his best with a couple of telling saves keeping United infront. Unfortunately for United the problem of extra pressure being put on them and a swing in the momentum of the game gave PSG hope and they were rewarded with a own goal by Antony Martial. With time ticking away United may have been looking to share the points but it didn’t turn out like that. Manchester United’s star striker Marcus Rachford who has been taking on the British members of Parliament in the press by trying to convince them to feed the poorest and most vunerable children in society with free schools meals during holiday periods showed he could play with that pressu

Devil In The Detail SRD · Reacting to Wembley podcast and staying on course for more Rugby league can be a game of very fine margins as we saw in the Challenge Cup Final on Saturday. The width of defeat was no thicker than a cigarette paper. Salford now face a gruelling fixture schedule of three matches in seven days against Wigan, St. Helens and Warrington. After Saturday’s tremendous effort at Wembley Stadium their is no doubt Salford coach Ian Watson will want to get back to winning ways and finish the season as high in the League table as possible. Salford have won the last two meetings, beating Wigan on their on ground in a thunderous playoff semi final last season and The Red Devils produced a storming comeback this season to upset the Warriors back in March. After a disappointing performance in the Challenge Cup semi final Wigan’s eggs lay firmly in the Super League basket. The pressure is on for them to reach the Grand Final after missing out in 2019. Since returning to action

Challenge Cup Final thoughts - View from the commentary Box.

The challenge cup win escapes Salford’s grasps for another year. A heroic attempt by the players will warm the cockles of many Salford fans who watched it from the confort of their front rooms or in a pub on Saturday afternoon. As a fan of our fantastic club I can’t ask anymore effort  from the players who wore the jersey on Saturday afternoon. The club have been Corona hit before the biggest match of this and many season with 2 players being tested positive and 2 more getting inconclusive results,  a question would have been asked if physically the players were in peak condition? This question was answered enfactically as for the full 80 minutes the 17 Salford players ran their blood to water both in attack and defence, never taking a backward step. Leeds Rhinos had terrarorial advantage throughout and plenty of ball too in dangerous areas but this Salford side backed their fitness to continue to make the tackles needed and not rely on slowing down play and trying to con the referee w

Salford v Leeds Challenge Cup Final report

After fifty one years the day finally arrived. Salford proudly walked out at the iconic Wembley stadium to contest for Rugby League’s holy grail, The Challenge Cup. A competition steeped in glory, memories and history. Even though the match was behind closed doors everyone involved with Salford Rugby League club knew the importance and the huge prize at stake. Salford’s only Challenge Cup wine came back in 1938. That side has since been immortalised and the same fate lay in store for Ian Watson’s side of 2020 if they could get the job done. Watson made changes with Dan Sarginson and Jack Ormondroyd sadly missing through the positive virus tests. Every Salford supporter hopes those two get their chance again in the near future. Niall Evalds slotted back in at fullback. The rest of Salford’s starting thirteen remaining exactly the same as the semi final. Leeds settled in to the game the quicker of the two sides and limited Salford territory wise in the early exchanges. You could hear the

Devil In The Detail SRD · Joey Lussick and Ian Watson challenge cup chat It’s been the dream of every Salford supporter for so long, after 51 years our famous old club will return to Wembley Stadium to play in the Challenge Cup Final. Beaten in 1969 in a match full of controversy 11-6 against a tough and talented Castleford team, Salford failed to reach another final throughout the clubs glory years of the 1970s. In the first two seasons of the 70s Castleford knocked Salford out at Wheldon Road in two epic encounters. Featherstone Rovers on their way to lifting the trophy in 1973 dumped a much fancied Salford side out at Post Office Road. Two years running in 1974 and 1975 Leeds smashed Salford’s cup dream along with Workington and Huddersfield. At the end of the decade after two replays Bramley edged Salford out 7-5 at Swinton’s Station Road.  The 1980s didn’t offer much more hope as the famous trophy always seemed to allude us. In 1981 however a thrilling cup run took Salford to the

Salford v Hull KR Match Report

Image
Devil In The Detail SRD · Chris Atkin Hull KR and the warm up for Wembley podcast  With the news breaking that Salford Red Devil’s had suffered with 2 players catching the Corona virus infection which has resulted in 4 players in total self isolating the result of this match became inconsequential. We wish the players and family’s effected a speedy recovery. Hull KR started the game on the front foot and Salford were under pressure but against the run of play Salford had a opportunity when good work from Salford’s back division sent Luis Robert’s over in the corner, unfortunately Salford were denied a try because of a infringement and it was chalked off. The Robins of Hull made the pressure count as Mikey Lewis scored after a rampaging run by Kane Linney. Salford hit back with a great try, lots of good work from the forwards placed Salford into position for Greg Burke and Tom Gilmore to link up to send Connor Jones over for a score. Ed Chamberlain added the extra two points and Salfor
