Salford v Hull KR Match Report
With the news breaking that Salford Red Devil’s had suffered with 2 players catching the Corona virus infection which has resulted in 4 players in total self isolating the result of this match became inconsequential.
We wish the players and family’s effected a speedy recovery.
Hull KR started the game on the front foot and Salford were under pressure but against the run of play Salford had a opportunity when good work from Salford’s back division sent Luis Robert’s over in the corner, unfortunately Salford were denied a try because of a infringement and it was chalked off.
The Robins of Hull made the pressure count as Mikey Lewis scored after a rampaging run by Kane Linney.
Salford hit back with a great try, lots of good work from the forwards placed Salford into position for Greg Burke and Tom Gilmore to link up to send Connor Jones over for a score. Ed Chamberlain added the extra two points and Salford were level.
Both sides played their part in a tough 1st half from this point, Ian Watson will be happy for such a tough workout for his squad and how they reacted to the pressure put on them by the Robins.
Just before half time Hull KR took the lead, a burst down the middle left Salfords defence scrambling but they were unable to stop Ben Crooks going over to score.
The conversion was successful and Salford went into half time trailing by six point.
The Red Devil’s came out in the second half with a spring in their step and were rewarded with a fabulous try from Luke Yates. It was great footwork from the energetic forward who collected a pass from Elliott Keir to dance over by the posts. Chamberlain converted again and Salford were growing in confidence.
Salford were the victims of a penalty try as Mickey Lewis was adjudged to have been pushed of the ball in the act of scoring. To say salford fans at home were shocked is a understatement I can only compare it to the water splash final try by John Atkinson. Mr. J. P. Hebblethwaite decition replayed as if 2020 could not get any weirder.
The Red Devil’s put their best foot forward and hit back again, this time it was Fullback Olly Ashall Bott who found space and zig zagged his wayover to score for Salford.
Jordan Abdull the Hull KR halfback found space on the edge defence of Salford after a offload from former salford star Weller Hauraki caused problems in the Reds defence.
Showing the spirit from the last few weeks Salford showed that they had plenty of fight left in them.Pauli Pauli was penalised for a forward pass which was debatable but this didn’t stop salford pressing the Hull KR defence.
They were rewarded with 5 minutes to go as Ed Chamberlain dived over in the corner after good work by Ashall Bott.
The scores were tied as Chamberlain missed the conversion and extra time looked a option.Unfortunately for Salford a high tackle by Pauli Pauli on Matt Parcell was penalised by the referee and Jamie Ellis kicked the winning penalty.
A brave performance by Salford ahead of Wembley, the result wasn’t what coach Ian Watson would have wanted but he would have happy with the courage shown by his players in a tough game.As the days tick by this result will he forgotten but history could be made on Saturday and their places in Salford Red Devil’s folklore will be guaranteed if a win can be manifested.
