When the season finished few if any Salford fans would have predicted what would have happened next. The news of Richard Marshalls departure will be hard to take for some, he has stated many times his ambition to coach at a higher level and fans of the club would accept through gritted teeth if this came to pass if he had departed for a NRL or elite Super League club. Ian Watson had already rejected a move from Hull Fc to secure his services last month many thought the Salford project would run for another season at least and with the financial situation improved because of the CVA and another attempt at glory would have taken place. Unfortunately it wasn’t ment to be. The challenge for Salford is to continue the progress made under Ian Watson with a new face incharge. There are lots coaches being linked to the Salford job, coaches who are experienced, who have had big jobs before. Tim Sheens a ex director of football at Salford and Brian McDermott will feel they have the know how to c

Wakefield v Salford Match Report

As the curtains started to draw on Salford’s 2020 season the clubs final assignment of a very long and testing year was a match with Wakefield Trinity. Since Wakefield’s promotion to Super League at the end of the 1998 season, Salford have won this fixture on just three occasions from 21 attempts. Tonight’s match was very different from previous years and was played once again behind closed doors at Headingley. It was a very chilly evening just before kick off with plenty of mist in the air and the odd loud boom from the fireworks near by. After thumping Catalans on Monday Salford coach Ian Watson made one or two subtle changes to his side. Sadly departing duo Kris Welham and Joey Lussick both missed out on the seventeen. Connor Jones started at hooker and Jack Ormondroyd returned in the pack. Another player saying farewell in a Salford shirt tonight was Mark Flanagan. A model of commitment, consistency and quality over the last five seasons he started his final appearance at loose f

Wakefield v Salford Big match preview

With the future fixtures against Castleford and Hull Kingston Rovers not going ahead due to the virus, Salford’s final match of 2020 will be against Wakefield Trinity. The Red Devils don’t have the best record in this fixture. Since Wakefield were promoted to Super League at the end of the 1998 season Salford have won just three times at Belle Vue in twenty one attempts. This year the match will be played at Headingley behind closed doors.  It’s been a tough season for all the clubs and although Salford haven’t reached the Grand Final again, the year has still been a success. Gracing the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley for the first time in fifty one years was very bittersweet with supporters not being able to attend. The team came so close on the day. In terms of League position the table looks harsh on Ian Watson’s men. Losing the two points gained against Toronto, having to forfeit the recent match against Warrington and then a six point deduction for mismanagement under the previ

Salford v Catalan Match Report

Salford performed a 2nd half blitz against the Catalan Dragons to secure a victory back at the AJ Bell Stadium. Salford who had to forfeit their last game against Warrington due to injuries showed the rest period created had done them the world of good with a strong performance. The 1st half Catalan came out strong and registered the 1st try with Paul Séguier opening the scoring, James Maloney adds the extras for the French Team. It got better for The Dragons as Israel Folou found space to send over Tom Davis to score. 0-12 to Catalan and Salford looked out of sorts. Salford got a foot back in the game tho with a try from Krisnan Inu who found space on the wing and squeezed over to score and then converted the extra 2 points against his former club. The match became a bit of a arm wrestle and Catalan scored.  Confusion rained  in the Salford defence the ball was spilled and it was swooped on by Sam Kasiano who dived over to score. The conversion was successful and Catalan had their two

Its been another tough week for Salford. After last weeks thrilling victory over St.Helens, Ian Watson was unable to get seventeen fit players for Monday’s match with Warrington. This left the only option of forfeiting the game giving the Wolves a 24-0 win. This is obviously disappointing but this 2020 season is very different one and clubs are struggling with not only the logistics but the welfare of the players. For teams with smaller squads it’s proving a painstaking task all round.  With the Dragons being cleared to travel and play this match the race is on for them to get through their matches. Steve McNamara’s side have only played twelve games but with eight wins their win percentage sees them challenging for the top four. Catalans should be the fresher of the two sides having not played since the 9th October. The last time the two sides met in September was the Challenge Cup Quarter Final tie. A fantastic match went to Golden Point Extra Time, Dan Sarginson crossed to score the
