Wigan v Salford Big Match preview

Image
Devil In The Detail SRD · Hooray in Huddersfield as its a Wake up Call for playoff chances ahead of Trinity on Friday Both sides go into this game in good form. Salford have conceded just one try in two matches after keeping Wakefield scoreless last Friday. Wigan went to Perpignan a day later and beat Catalans 0-34. I don’t think anyone saw that score coming but it was certainly a remarkable Wigan performance that leaves the Warriors just two points behind the top of the table Dragons.  With four matches left Wigan will be pulling out all the stops to snatch the League Leaders Shield.  Salford are clinging on to the top six. The Rugby Football League have got the table mixed up after the weekends matches and there has been some confusion on Salford’s points total compared to Hull Kingston Rovers. It does seem a bit of a farce that simple things like this in a sport are incorrect.  After two wins on the spin Salford will now have to step up and a much bigger test awaits on Friday nigh

Devil In The Detail SRD · Reaction to Wakefield win  Salford Red Devils ladies travel to top of the table Leigh and gave them the fright of their lives in a tough game at Leigh Minor Rangers Twist lane on the 20th August. Salford started brightly and forced Leigh into a error from kick off, a drop out was their reward,  good work from prop Forward Emerald Hickey and Fullback Sage Bannister put Scrum half Demi Jones in space to send winger Liana Leota over for the opening score of the afternoon. Leigh hit back shortly after with a period of pressure,  Salfords  Fullback Bannister and winger Leota were both called into action twice in a minute to perform try saving tackles to prevent a score by Leigh winger Toryn Blackwood. Unfortunately for Salford Leigh did score after 10 minutes as Claire Collins crashed over by the post. Salford remained upbeat and continued to pres the Leopards, they were rewarded again on 15 minutes when a rampaging run by Forward Megan Condliffe gave Salford ter

Devil In The Detail SRD · Hooray in Huddersfield as its a Wake up Call for playoff chances ahead of Trinity on Friday   For the second week running Salford coach Paul Rowley had the luxury of naming the same twenty one man squad. Last week’s victory at Huddersfield had put smiles back on faces and help to reignite the Red Devils playoff hopes. Looking at the League table it’s so close at the moment and a win over Wakefield would set Salford up nicely for the remaining four fixtures of the run in.  Salford’s line up was identical to the side that beat Huddersfield last Friday. Trinity lined up with with Mason Lino and the experienced Luke Gale in the halves. Former Salford centre Josh Griffin started and the talented Max Jowitt was at fullback. David Fifita and Kevin Proctor made the bench.  Weather wise it was a pleasant evening cooler than of late with a gentle breeze. Perfect conditions for Rugby League and as ever the immaculate pitch looked like a very expensive green carpet. Sal

Devil In The Detail SRD · Hooray in Huddersfield as its a Wake up Call for playoff chances ahead of Trinity on Friday One things for certain last Friday’s victory at Huddersfield gave Salford and the supporters a huge boost. The team showed a fantastic spirit, desire and will to win. They wanted it more than the Giants and that’s a great sign going in to the last five fixtures. Salford now face Wakefield h, Wigan a, Warrington h, Hull Kingston Rovers a and Catalans at home.  Teams that hit the playoffs in good form tend to do well in knock out Rugby League. Teams that limo into the top six notoriously struggle to make an impact and invariably get thumped. Things seem to be looking brighter now at Salford. The squad looks settled with the majority of the player fit and healthy which is always a good sign at the stage of the season.  Of course the result last Friday was so important but for me I thought the attitude of the players was superb. They were willing to do the dirty work where

Devil In The Detail SRD · Message to NASA to name more red planets, Rowley refs despair, Ladies win and onward to Fartown   Salford coach Paul Rowley had the luxury of playing an unchanged side in this playoff chasing fixture at Huddersfield. Both sides were in the hunt for the top six and both knew that defeat in this fixture would be a significant blow with only half a dozen matches left. Rowley and his opposition coach Ian Watson were both finally working with settled spines so an exciting game was expected. The pitch was in immaculate condition almost like a bowling green as both sides marched out for kick off. Their was plenty of nervous tension in the air and the match started in a caging fashion. This hampered both sides as the opening quarter was littered with errors. Knock on’s and forward passes kept the match scoreless but Salford enjoyed the majority of possession and attacking territory.  The opening try came against the run of play really. Luke Yates broke through but

Devil In The Detail SRD · Message to NASA to name more red planets, Rowley refs despair, Ladies win and onward to Fartown Salford’s slump in form and a few weeks of resurgence from the Giants sees the two clubs just two points apart on the League table. Watching the Giants get thumped at Headingley just a few months ago most people wrote off their playoff chances, now it seems they are definitely in with a chance and Friday nights match is pivotal for both sides. I thought Salford were very unlucky not to get the win last time out against St.Helens. The intensity they showed in the first half was outstanding and the 15-2 half time lead was well deserved. If the Red Devils can come out firing like that from the kick off they can’t beat Huddersfield with no problems.  Ian Watson has been under a lot of pressure this season but the people in charge at the Giants have not panicked at all. Chairman Ken Davy has kept faith with his coach and I think that’s pretty commendable these days. I

Devil In The Detail SRD · Player Reaction to Saints defeat pop up podcast  Salford Red Devils ladies made it two wins on the bounce with a strong performance against Bradford Bulls. The game started at a frantic pace with both sides creating half chances Salford loose forward Brogan Evans who was superb all afternoon made a trademark run though the Bradford defence, unfortunately for Salford the Bulls stopped that Salford attack as it started to look dangerous.  The Bulls right Winger Williams had Salford's defence in scramble mode early on with a strong run but the Red Devils had enough bodies in the tackle to prevent a early score. Salford scored the opening try of the game shortly after. A towering bomb was spilt by Bradford fullback MacMillan and from the resulting scrum 20 metres from the Bulls line a strong run by Salford forward Emerald Hickey and good work by Hooker Taz Cocoran created space for Scrum half Demi Jones to angle a kick to winger Hollie Jones to gather and sc

Devil In The Detail SRD · Player Reaction to Saints defeat pop up podcast   It was another carnival atmosphere at the Salford Stadium prior to kick off. Light showers faded away to leave a bright dry afternoon. Before the match Salford had many ex players from yesteryear on the pitch and the supporters lapped it up. It was quite emotional to see the adulation the fans still held for these players. Heroes who’d represented the club in years gone by. Salford coach Paul Rowley made a fair few changes after last Saturday’s defeat in France. Danny Addy, Tim Lafai, Marc Sneyd and Kallum Watkins all returned to the starting thirteen and new signing Brad Singleton also started at prop. Saints took the lead from a early penalty goal but the Red Devils thundered back with an immediate response. Kallum Watkins powered over to put Salford in front and Marc Sneyd converted 6-2. Salford’s barnstorming start continued when Ryan Brierley increased the lead. The Red Devils full back read a kick super

Devil In The Detail SRD · Krisnan Inu big match chat and Whiteside's world of rugby pop up podcast Well it was quite a trip for Salford over to France. The gruelling temperatures and facing a Catalans side that are on fire at the moment was a real tough test.  Salford defended desperately for the first quarter of the match and hardly had any possession. The Dragons pack dominated the game and with the Red Devils really light in the pack the match was over at half time as a contest. That said though I thought the players worked hard.  They looked busted at times and if it had been a boxing match the referee would of waved it off or the towel would of come in. The travelling Salford supporters were tremendous and it had me pretty emotional at the full time hooter. Not many sides would see there fans singing there hearts out for the full eighty minutes and after the match when they’d been hammered 42-0. Coach Paul Rowley and his assistant Kurt Haggerty were huddled on the pitch at f
