Richard Marshall - The departure
The news has broken that Salford Red Devils and Head Coach Richard Marshall has gone their separate ways and the club are now in the hunt for a new coach for 2022.
Richard came in at the start of 2021 season and he guided Salford to a Challenge Cup Quarter final extra time defeat against Castleford and to a 11th pace finish in the Super league.
Richard Marshalls Salford Red Devils recorded 7 Super League wins with heroic performances away at Huddersfield and a clinical try scoring display at home against Hull FC the highlights, his total win loss ratio after 24 games in charge was 31.8% putting him in 13th place in the list of successful Salford Red Devils coaches.
Salford scored 69 tries in 2021 (the 3rd worse in SL) and conceded 584 points, these stats give you an idea the struggles the team had despite having Super leagues top try scorer Ken Sio we lacked collective fire power to break teams down.
His style of play was questioned by many fans as unimaginative and ill disciplined on the field hampered the side, covid absences and injuries played a big part in who was available for selection and hampered his ability to pick his strongest 17.
Marshalls men finished the season strongly with 2 wins in 4 games including a golden point defeat away at Warrington and it seemed that Richard would get a off season to mould this squad for the 2022 season.
Unfortunately it seems the decision makers at Salford had other ideas and a both parties have decided to their separate ways.
I've always found Richard to be informative and open in press conferences and was openly talking about planning for next season and what he learned from this season.
The future will tell us if this decision was the correct one, not giving Richard a off season to build a squad in his image may look a bit harsh but I trust that Paul King, Ian Blease and the other stake holders in this decition making process will have a name in mind, There is plenty of coaching talent out here who will do a great job at Salford both domestically and abroad.
I am sure that a strong contender will be selected and we will see a resurgence of Salford Red Devils in 2022.
