Salford Ladies v Swinton Ladies Match Report

It was a historic day for Salford Red Devils as the ladies team played their 1st game since their creation and beat rivals Swinton Lions at the AJ Bell Stadium. Head Coach Chris Bates should be proud of his girls. From acorns big trees grow and there were plenty of positives on show to think this group of ladies are on a track to something special.

After a solid 1st ten minutes of the contest history was made as Vannessa Hadley scored Salford's 1st try, Sam Boyes doubled the Red Devils lead with a powerful run leaving the Swinton defence in her wake as the ladies went into half time 8-0 up.

Salford ladies were pegged back early in the 2nd half by Swinton when Cloe Birkett showed skill bamboozling the Salford defence and going over in the corner. to make the score 8-4.

The game was still in the balance at this point and it needed a special piece of skill to turn it Salford's way, good hands by the Salford team allowed Lauren Ellison space to find the corner and the Red Devils were in the ascendancy.

With confidence flowing though the ladies veins we didnt have long to wait for another try, Abi Collins with a rampaging run crashed over by the posts and Salford were in control at 16-4, Demi Jones converted her 1st and Salford ladies conversion of the afternoon to create history again.

Louise Fellingham was named captain for Salford Red Devils and she was next on the score sheet for Salford after 63 minutes, she only started playing 12 months ago but you would not have known as her leadership inspired the team on throughout, Jones added her 2nd conversion of the game as the Salford faithful who had braved the cold enjoyed the entertainment.

Going into the last 10 minutes Salford sensed another try was coming, Casey Naylors power and grace was too much for the Swinton defenders as she recorded a well deserved try, Jones converted again and that finished the scoring for the afternoon.

As the final hooter sounded both sets of players came together to congratulate each other on a hard fought match, A moment that will go down in Salford Red Devils history and I'm sure there will be much more to look forward to as Chris Bates and his ladies march on to the next challenge.
