Hull vs Salford Match Report
After three storms and countless days of rain Salford and their supporters made the journey up the M62 on a crisp but dry day with a glimmer of sunshine.
The Red Devils had a sense of optimism after two victories and were confident of getting another good result. Hull were without Luke Gale after the scrum half copped a five match ban for that strange challenge on Johnny Lomax last week.
That said the hosts still had plenty of strike players in their squad with Jake Connor being one that can cause damage.
Salford coach Paul Rowley made a slight change from last weeks team with Dan Sarginson starting at centre with Deon Cross moving to the bench. James Greenwood was named on the team sheet but it was Ryan Lannon who came in as a late change.
Hull started with Ben McNamara at scrum half along side the experienced Josh Reynolds.
Hull came up with a mistake very early on in their own half. Salford came close but Ken Sio just couldn’t get to Marc Sneyd’s teasing kick.
Hull’s Darnell McIntosh looked to being flying in for a try but Joe Burgess smothered him in to touch right on the corner post.
Moments later McIntosh got the try following a neat kick through to touch down in the corner. Connor dragged the conversion wide. 4-0.
Ryan Brierley and Joe Burgess came up with a huge error deep in their own half. Brierley with a ambitious pass which was coughed up by Burgess. Hull capitalised on the next set finding a hole in the Salford defence. Cameron Scott went over. Connor booted the goal off the touchline 10-0.
Things got worse for Brierley when good quick hands left Scott in space and he chipped over the Salford full back followed his kick to score a fine try.
Connor dragged his kick to the right of the posts but Salford were unraveling fast and trailing 14-0.
Hull got their fourth try of the half when Joe Lovodua reaches out to score close to the line. Yet another try coach Rowley will be disappointed to concede. Salford didn’t seem to have an answer to Jake Connor or the Hull pack who kept rolling forward it what was turning into a very one sided first half.
Salford needed a score desperately and got one when Sneyd kicked high, Tim Lafai picked the pocket of the Hull defenders to score under the posts.
As the second half started Sneyd and Connor shared a few words. This continued on the next set when Sneyd was sin binned for an incident in the tackle. Connor gave as good as he got though and had plenty to say all afternoon to the Salford players. The hosts made the extra man advantage count and it was Connor who got the try.
Another Hull try soon followed as Salford failed to deal with another kick through. Brierley lost it near the posts and Jordan Lane pounced to touch down. Shortly after Lane grabbed his second try, Salford’s defence all at sea looking very disorganised.
Things got worse for Salford when another huge mistake this time Joe Burgess misjudged a kick close to his line allowing it to bounce. Josh Reynolds followed up to take a gift wrapped four points.
With the match well and truly gone Salford kept the ball flowing on the last tackle with some entertaining off the cuff rugby. Eventually Ken Sio finished the move off with a nice try.
Chris Satae scores probably the easiest try of his career hitting a flat pass a few yards out to roar over and a successful conversion made it 48-10 with five minutes remaining.
Tim Lafai got his second try in the closing minutes off a neat kick through from Brodie Croft.
It was a very disappointing afternoon for Salford though as they were second best all match. Too many mistakes and some very poor defence cost them dearly.
Joe Burgess went hurtling towards the line in the final seconds but was tackled in to touch to sum up a miserable match for the Red Devils. You make your own luck in sport and today Salford were nowhere near good enough.
