Warrington 30 Salford 14 Match report

It was a night to remember for a rugby legend as Salford and Warrington came together to celebrate the career of Lee Mossop.

The ex Salford Captain who lead the club to Super League and Challenge Cup Finals was presented to both teams and the crowd before the game and was given a warm welcome on a cold night at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Paul Rowley and Darrell Powell opted to field youthful sides with a mix of 1st team sqaud members, Salford fielded new signing Tim Lafai who showed some good touches early on as both teams prepared for the start of Super League next week.

Warrington opened the scoring as fullback Josh Thewlis cut through the Salford defence to score.

Approaching half time Salford built pressure and we’re rewarded when Ryan Lannon showed great strength to get the ball down under pressure to register Salfords 1st score of the night.

As time ticked on towards half time it was a ex Salford loanee who scored a crucial try for Warrington, Ellis Robson showed great strength to burrow his way over the line for the Wolves and Salford went into half time trailing 12-4.

The 2nd half was all change on the field as Paul Rowley rotated his squad and gave young talent a change to shine, lead by the all action hooker Adam Holt and forward Bradley Calland they were rewarded when impressive halfback Jack Steven’s found space and created a try for Salford winger and England lion Joseph Brady.

Salford had momentum and pegged Warrington back further as 6’ 2 18 stone Welsh forward Jacob Lee used his strength to carry several Warrington defenders over the line to score much to the delight of himself, his team mates and the travelling Salford Support.

Unfortunately for Salford they were unable to build further on the momentum and Warrington scored 3 tries, a 2nd for Jake Thewlis, 1 for Jack Derbyshire and 1 for Ellis Longstaff in the last 20 minutes gave the score line a lob sides look.

Paul Rowleys boys were full of effort throughout. Centre Mylers Dalton Harrop, Full back Calum Green and loose forward Daniel Spencer Tonks were the standout performers but as a unit all of the Salford youth should be celebrated.
They will be looking forward to further outings in the reserves as the season goes on
