Salford Red Devils Ladies 42 Wigan St Pats 0 Match report

Salford Red Devils ladies were in league cup action at Salford City Roosters as they were drawn against Wigan St Patricks Ladies on Sunday afternoon.

Head Coach Chris Bates Rang the changes as fullback Erin Tong failed to recover from a knee injury, Jenna Monks came in from the bench, Ebonne Fletcher came in for Laura Bent and Casey Naylor starting at prop.

Salford started brightly probing the Wigan defence for a opening, Steph Gray had the 1st opportunity for the Red Devils but a last ditch defensive effort by St Pats kept the game scoreless.

Gray was not to be denied 5 minutes later, Salford's utility back playing in the centre  powered onto a Louise Fellington pass to open the scoring for the Red Devils, the conversion was missed but Salford were on the board. Scrum half Demi Jones who shone throughout teased the Wigan defence with a inch perfect grubber kick after 13 minutes which was collected by winger Lauren Ellison who scored to put Salford 8-0 up.

Wigan St Pats showed lots of enthusiasm and tested the Salford defence in the early stages Cloe Myers had Salford's defence in scramble mode but a inch perfect tackle by stand in fullback Luci McKeown defused the danger.

Chris Bates rotated his forwards with Darcy Price and Hanna Wicks entering the field and they making a instant impact, from 60 metres out Mckeown showed great pace and agility to avoid 4 Wigan defenders to score under the posts, the kick was good by Demi Jones and Salford lead 14-0 after 27 minutes.

Salford had momentum with Price leading the way with a strong carry, this allowed Jones on 30 minutes to find Winger Ellison with another precision kick and she crashed over for her 2nd of the game, Jones tagged on the extras and Salford were in control.

Demi Jones continued to open up the Wigan defence seemingly at will, after being called back from a 40 metre break because of knock on in the build up the creative scrum half from a scrum found Salford's inform fullback Mckeown with another trademark inch perfect kick and Luci did the rest to put Salford further in front, the kick was good from Jones and Salford lead 26-0 at half time.

Eponne Fletch came on in the 2nd half for Jenna Monks as Chris Bates ladies turned the screw, Wigans resistance was broken 20 minutes into the 2nd half when Luci Mckeown got her hattrick try crossing by the posts. Demi Jones kept the scoreboard ticking over with the conversion. Salford were 30 points up with 20 minutes to go and the watching Salford Faithful were all wondering how many Salford would end up with.

Wigan St Pats had not given up and sprung into life with some creative play, unfortunately for them Salford's defence stood firm and the danger passed,  2nd Row Victoria Kini who was a thorn in the St Pats side all day created space for Darcy Price who fed Hanna Wicks and despite the attention of two Wigan defenders Wicks scored, Jones converted again.

The final score of the afternoon was top draw, Kini linked up with forwards Abi Collins and Kayleigh Bradshaw who put through Captain Louise Fellington  to complete the rout. 42-0.

Head Coach Chris Bates will happy with his teams performance, against a hard working St Pats they showed good control in attack and defence to get the big win. As they enter the next round of the league cup with the productive Stef Gray, the radar accuracy kicking of Demi Jones, the clinical pair of  Luci Mckeown and Lauren Ellison this team will fear nobody.
