Salford Red Devils Women 20 Wakefield Women 16 Match Report
Chris Bates ladies were narrowly beaten last week against Wigan Warriors and they were hoping to bounce back with a win.
Chris Bates rang the changes with Lucy Mceown coming into the back division and Laura Bent coming into the pack with Jenny Monks and Hanah Wicks dropping to the interchange bench.
In the early stages of the contest Wakefield put pressure on Salford but the ladies put up some big defence to repel the danger.
Wakefields disapline was questioned as they were reduced to 12 ladies with a sin bin after 10 minutes Salford with Captain Louise Fellingham and Vannessa Hadley dictating operations Salford had a period of pressure which didn’t result in a try and Trinity were back to a full team 10 minutes later.
Wakefield opened the scoring with Libby Priestly the conversion was good and Trinity lead 6-0 after 30 minutes, Salford hit straight back with a exciting period of play, a mix up between two Wakefield players allowing captain Fellingham the space to get over the line. Demi Jones added the extras and the scores were tied going up to half time.
Just before the half time whistle Wakefield poured forward and were rewarded when Lisa Taylor found a gap in the Salford defence to put Trinity infront at half time 6-12.
2nd half started brightly for Salford after another period of substained pressure on the Wakefield line good play by the Red Devils created enough room for Winger Luci Mckeown to touch down, the boot of Jones was back in action and Salford were back level at 12-12 after 45 minutes.
5 minutes later Salford had momentum and scored back to back tries, Mckeown with another good finish put Salford infront and Erin Tong showing promise at fullback found a way over the Wakefield line to put Saford infront 20-12.
As the minutes ticked on Wakefield looked for a way back into the contest, they were rewarded after 68 minutes when Emilia Povall-Clarke crashed over in the corner for Wakefield ladies. The conversion was missed and with the score 20-16 to Salford the last 10 minutes promised to be tense.
Wakefield turned the screw but were met with terrific defence and a lot of hard work, chances came and went for Wakefield and Salford took the spoils resulting in joyous scenes from the girls and the home support.
Chris Bates ladies were good value for their win against Super league opponents Wakefield, with 2 wins in 3 games this pre season the question is how far can this Salford Red Devils ladies team go in the championship? We are super excited to find out.
