Swinton Lions 82 West Wales Raiders 4 Match report

Swinton Lions recorded their 1st victory of their 2022 season with a convincing win against West Wales Raiders at Heywood Road.

Swinton opened the scoring in the 2nd minute, a creative Lions move sent Centre Liam Forsyth over for the opening score. 4 minutes later the Lions were in again, scrum half Jack Hanson combined well with 2nd row Rhodri Lloyd who served up Jordan Case for a easy score, The kick from Hanson was good and the lions lead 10 -0.

It was all one way traffic at Heywood Road as Swinton moved the ball wide to allow Winger Richard Lepori to cross and extend their lead to 14 points. shortly after the West Wales defence spilt the ball trying to intercept and this allowed Max Roberts the opportunity to cross for the Lions. 18-0 after 16 minutes and Allan Colemans men kept the scoreboard ticking over.

The next lion on the score sheet was Mike Butt. Swinton playing with confidence moved the ball wide allowing Butt space to score in the corner, conversion was missed but with a lead of 22 points Alan Coleman and his men were happy.

Jack Hanson showed plenty of quality all afternoon was next on the score sheet, a break down the middle of the field resulted in a try, His conversion was good in the 25th minute.

Approaching half time the Lions were toying with the Raiders, Dan Abram who was involved in lots of the positives in the afternoon, scored his own 6 pointer try to put the lions further in front and on the hooter Butt got his 2nd of the afternoon.  With the conversion good Swinton were very good value for their 40 nil lead.

The 2nd half stated as the 1st half had ended with Swinton dominating, after a Raiders error Abram lead the lions counter attack allowing Max Roberts to get over for their 1st points of the 2nd half.

The Raiders who had a torrid afternoon were in for much worse as Shane Lee was sent to the sin bin after 46 minutes, this created space in the West Wales defensive line which was exploited ruthlessly by Rhodri Lloyd who scored.

A flowing Swinton move on 60 minutes was finished by Deane Meadows, Abram converted the kick and Swinton were just trailing the time keeper by two.   Wave after wave of Swinton attack came and they were rewarded as Lloyd , Forsyth Abram and Jack Hanson scored their 2nd of the game in the dying minutes.

West Wales record a try late on but it didn't dampen the celebrations at Heywood Road as Swinton start their league campaign with a impressive win.
