Oulton Raidettes 26 Salford 12 Match report
Salford Red Devils ladies suffered their 1st defeat in the championship away at Oulton as the Raidettes staged a 2nd half fight back.
Salford had a large absentee list so Chris Bates had to rearrange his team. Helena Waker moved into the centres,Victoria Kini returned to the pack as did Casey Naylor and new signing Brogan Evans deputised from the bench.
Oulton started brightly and opened the scoring in the 1st attack of the game, finding space on Salfords right hand side the Raidetts took advantage.
The conversion was missed and Oulton lead 4-0.
Twenty five minutes into the 1st half Salford hit back, good work by Tamzin Corcoran and Louise Fellingham sent scrum half Demi Jones through a gap to score. Jones added the extras to her try and Salford lead 4-6.
Oulton who are among the favourites in the championship retook the lead 6 minutes later, Salfords goal line defence was busted as a big 2nd row went over by the posts. The conversion was good and Oulton lead 10-6.
After a spell off the field Megan Condliffe returned to the action and made a instant impact for Salford, Victoria Kini built a platform with a strong run, Captain Fellingham caused chaos in the Raidettes defence, she created a chance for centre Steph Gray who showed she had ice in her vains as the seconds counted down to half time to dive over and with Jones converting again The Red Devils lead 10-12 at the break.
The 2nd half was tight with both teams being physical, unfortunately for Salford Oulton scored next after 56 minutes Salfords left hand side defence was busted by some good play by the Raidettes and the lead switched hands again 14-12 . Conversion was missed.
The next score was crucial and Oulton found a way through the Salford defence 6 minutes later to put daylight between the teams. A high kick caused alarm bells to ring in the Salford defence, Oulton took advantage and scored by the posts. The conversion was good and the Raidettes lead by 8.
Salford rolled up their sleeves to try and find a way back into the game, unfortunately for Chris Bates ladies their efforts were all in vain as with 10 minutes to go Oulton scored the final try of the game sending Salford ladies to their 1st league defeat.
Oulton are a very good side, they disposed of Super League sides Castleford and Wakefield in their run to the quarter final of the Challenge cup, Chris Bates ladies will be disappointed their unbeaten run has ended but the challenge is to put the disappointment behind them and bounce back against Stanningley at home on the 12th June.
