Salford Red Devils 28 Dewsbury Moor 16 Match report
Salford were without prolific try scorer Luci Mckeown. Steph Gray filled in at fullback, Lauren Ellison moved into the centres and Jena Monks came in on the wing.
Kayleigh Bradshaw moved into the back row with Megan Condliffe slotting into loose forward to replace the injured Vanessa Hadley.
Salford started the brighter and we’re rewarded after 4 minutes, a kick by Demi Jones caused chaos in the Dewsbury defence and Ellison was on hand to score the 1st 4 pointer of the afternoon.
After a frantic start both sides settled down into their rythems with both forward packs making metres it was Dewsbury who were next to score to tie the scores up at 4-4 after 21 minutes.
Approaching half time Salford wrestled back control of the contest, Demi Jones, Louise Fellingham and Tamzin Cocoran probed the Dewsbury defence for a opening, they were rewarded when GB Teachers Centre Alex Simpson showed her class with a exciting score put through by Condliffe .
Reds in front at half time with Jones converting 10-4.
The Second half started well for Salford centre Ellison, Victoria Kini carved the Dewsbury defence open showing great strength and speed sending Ellison over for her 2nd of the game. Salford lead 16-4 after 48 minutes and Chris Bates ladies were expecting to kick on.
Dewsbury Moor had other ideas, they are made of tough stuff and they fought their way back into the contest. 2 quick tries in the 56th minute of the game rocked Salford and with the scores level at 16 all and Moor having the momentum it wasn’t looking good for Salford.
Salford were looking for somthing or someone to turn the tide and the game in their favour. It came in the shape of Full back Steph Gray, good work by Corcoran sent the full back through a gaping hole and Gray showed great strength and speed to go over for a wonderful solo effort, the conversion by Jones was good and the wind was in Salfords sails again, 22-16 with 20 minutes to go.
The next 15 minutes was full of excitement with both teams looking like they could be next to score. Lady of the match Kayleigh Bradshaw in particular for Salford stood out with some barnstorming runs and strong defence.
But as time ticked on and Dewsbury looking more desperate it was Salfords loose forward Megan Condliffe who burst the Dewsbury line once again sending Gray away to burrow her way over the line to secure the points for the Red Devils with 5 minutes to go.
Chris Bates ladies will be happy that Dewsbury tested them, they will have bigger tests to come in the league but their attention turns to the League cup quarter final At Illingworth this week.
Chris Bates reaction to Win over Dewsbury moor
“Delighted to be talking to you after another hard fought win. I felt made it harder than it needed to be, but ultimately the girls worked really hard, missing a few players as well, to secure two points.
In particular I was impressed with how our halves reacted to their game plan. We asked our halves to get us away from the ruck and play wider to get away from their pack and they did that effectively, helping us gain metres and put us in a position to win it.
We go back into the cup on the weekend, so really important that we knuckle down, take what we can from that game but leave it behind us and put ourselves in a position to perform again on Sunday.
