Salford Red Devils ladies 28 Warrington Lunas 14 Match report
Salford Red Devils ladies continued their quest for a league and cup double beating Warrington Lunas at the AJ Bell.
A large crowd had made their way to the stadium to the community pitches to welcome back the cup winners after their heroics last week against Orrell.
Victoria Kini came back into the starting 13 as did Sarina Tamou as Helena Walker came off the bench.
10 minutes into the game Warrington opened the scoring the ball was moved wide and it was Abigail Johnson with the touchdown, the conversion was missed but Chris Bates ladies trailed 0-4.
This fired the Red Devils up and after some good work by Fullback Luci Mckeown sent Centre Sadie Rihari over. Demi Jones landing the conversion Salford were infront 6-4.
Pace of the game and the hot sun beating down on the played ment that official water breaks were introduced after 20 minutes. Before the 1st one was called Warrington moved the ball towards the left hand side, Salfords defence outwide creaked as Warrington centre Bethany Cox scored in the corner, the conversion was missed but Salford were still behind 6-8.
Salford came out the other side of the break with increased vim and vigor, from kickoff with Warrington defenders all waiting for somebody else to pick the ball up Fullback Luci Mckeown raced onto the loose ball and desperate several defenders efforts under pressure scored for Salford. Demi Jones conversion was good and Salford lead 12-8.
10 minutes later Taz Cocoran sniffed a opening from 10 metres out, attacking the defensive line a delightful pass sent winger Lauren Ellison in for her 1st try.
Demi Jones conversion went wide but after 30 minutes of play Salford lead 16-8.
Lauren Ellison doubled her points tally two minutes later Louise Fellingham and Luci Mckeown linking up creating space outwide for Winger Ellison to get her 2nd score. Demi Jones Converted and salford lead by 14 points at half time.
The 2nd half was a tough affair with both sides showing heart, Salford came up with the decisive score Stand-off Louise Fellingham probed the Warrington line for a opening which appeared when Luci Mckeown side stepped her way though the on rushing defensive line and around fullback Hatis Dogus to score a remarkable try.
Holly Jones was the final try scorer of the evening the Warrington number 7 found space on the outside of the Salford defence and ran in from 30 metres.
It was a real tough game with both teams showing what the female game is all about, with great skill and work rate A big crowd who ventured down to the AJ Bell would have been impressed by the Salford performance and win.
Salfords next fixture is this Sunday as they face Widnes Vikings on the AJ Bell community pitch 1pm kickoff, title rivals Oulton travel to Stanningley, it promises to be a fantastic title run in with a grandstand finish with both teams due to face each other in a potential title shoot out on the 4th September.
