Salford 4 Wigan 38 Match report

Salford Red Devils ladies started their 2023 pre season campaign with defeat against Wigan Warriors.
Sage Bannister made her debut at Fullback with other new signings Sam Evans, Ellie Walsh, Summer Harris and Liana Leota coming off the bench.

The 1st 20 minutes both played some tough rugby with Salford's Winger Lauren Ellison wearing a war wound on her forehead from a tough tackle, With the Super League season not too far away and Wigan being one of Chris Bates ladies opponents in the challenge cup it was a good workout despite defeat.

Salford fullback and new signing Sage Bannister was harshly shown the yellow card for holding down in the tackle after a break from Grace Banks but despite Salford numerical disadvantage they took the lead in spectacular fashion right away, Wigan were pressing the Salford defence debutant Liana Leota read the play, intercepted a wayward pass to race 70 metres to the line to put Salford on the board.
Salford continued to press and asked Wigan questions  with a mixture of accurate passing and good strong running as both the forwards and backs had their moments in the game.

Salford started to rotate their players to build fitness ahead of the big kick off in a few weeks and Wigan found a way back into the game. A huge kick put pressure on the Salford defence this allowed Wigan position to attack from. Fortunately for Salford the final pass was judged as forward and Salford survived.

After having a try disallowed Wigan had their tales up and were reward soon after a darting run caused confusion in the Salford defence allowing Beri Salihi to pounce on the ball and score.
Wigan got over the Salford line again on half time Molly jones finishing a flowing move for the Warriors sending them in to the lead at half time 4-10.

The 2nd half started with Salford being forced into a drop out by some intense Wigan attack, the pressure was built and unfortunately Wigan found a way over the Salford line for a score, but Salford reacted well to the set back and with some good strong possession by the Salford forwards and patient play by Salford Captain Louise Fellingham chances started to come. a opportunity after a high kick  for Leota had the crowd at Salford City Roosters on their feet but unfortunately a scrambling wigan defence defused the danger.

More chances came Salford's way as Fellingham and Alex Simpson combined to send Kate Garry flying for the corner but unfortunately more heroic defence from the Warriors stopped the score.
A Demi Jones bomb caused the Wigan defence problems and the ball somehow didn't drop in a Salford hand and the danger went away.

Wigan weathered the Salford storm and put another 4 scores on the board  in the 2nd half as territory and ball were in favour of the Warriors.
The scores gave the score line a lobsided view, Chris Bates ladies will take a lot of positives from this encounter, Wigan are a good Super League team and our ladies showed enough in patches to leave us encouraged about what is to come.

Salford next pre season friendly is against Barrow on the 19th March on the community pitch at the AJ Bell as Chris Bates ladies continue their preparations for Super League 2
