Salford 12 Barrow 28 Match report
Salford Red Devils and Barrow served up a entertaining contest at the Salford City Stadium on Sunday unfortunately Chris Bates ladies ended up on wrong end of the score line.
Injuries ment that Chris Bates handed a debut to Fullback Hollie Jones and a forward dominated interchange bench with Yasmin Parton Sotomayor, Casey Naylor and Darcy Price all featuring during the 80 minutes
Salford started the better and opened the scoring as a high kick by Captain Louise Fellingham caused chaos in the Barrow defence, the ball went loose it was picked up by Phoebie Partington who found Winger Lauren Ellison who crossed for the opening score. Demi Jones converted and Salford lead 6-0.
Barrow hit back shortly after, a strong run by Hanna Shorlock gave the Raders territory and Kelly Friend went over for the score.
It was a exciting encounter with both teams creating opportunities unfortunately for Salford Barrow scored next scrum half Jodie Litherland found Claire Hutchinson who registered the score.
Salford came back with a period of pressure Demi Jones with a kick which bounce avaided a on rushing Alex Simpson who looked destined to score had Salford fans hands on heads.
Another kick by Jones had The Raiders backpedaling unfortunately the hard working Jessica Panayiotou on debut for Salford was unable to ground the ball as it zipped dead behind the Barrow dead ball goal line.
Even in defence Salford were dangerous as Jones attempted a interception but unfortunately the ball went to ground and the chance went away.
Barrow breached the Salford defence twice in the closing stages of the 1st half a team defensive effort rescued the Red Devils with a try saving tackle in the corner on Demi Fisher was a highlight.
Unfortunately for Salford Barrow got over the line just before half time Emily Stirzaker with the break before smith found the line under a pile of Salford bodies put the Raiders infront at half time 6-18
Salford came out with aggression and fight in the 2nd. Forward Yasmin Parton Sotomayor bulldozed her way though the centre of the Barrow defence ran 40m before handing off to the Supporting Loose Forward Brogan Evans who went under the posts for the score. The kick as good by Demi Jones and Salford trailed by 6.
Barrow were on the ropes, Salford had the wind in their Sails, a kick by Litherland was collected by Winger Ellison who brought the ball back from her own goal line. Only a desperate defensive effort prevented the Salford flyer racing into the open spaces of the community pitch.
The game was stopped for a period as a Barrow player injured her arm and was lead from the field, but the action after the break the action continued to flow as the minutes counted down.
A strong run by Jodie Morley put pressure on the Salford defence, Barrow forced a drop out of the back of that but Salford got the ball back with a big defensive effort throwing the Barrow playing into touch much to the delight of the Salford faithful.
Salford used the momentum to challenge the Barrow defence Hooker Taz Cocoran almost found Simpson with a kick which had defenders sweating.
It looked that Barrow had secured the points when Winger Lauren Mellen had burst the Salford line but Centre Steph Gray got back to produce another try saving tackle to keep the Red Devils in the contest.
Barrow broke Salford hearts with 5 minutes to go Litherland ghosting over for the critical score.
Barrow scored another try on the final hooter to give the score line a lob sided look.
Salford ladies effort in this game and so far this season is there for all to see, super league is a tough competition but they are more then holding their own.
