Swinton Lions 22 Keighey 22

Swinton Lions recorded their 1st Points of the season drawing with Keighley at Heywood Road in a thrilling encounter.

Swinton opened the scoring after 3 minutes as Connor Parkinson dived over in the corner, Reece Briers converted and the Lions lead 6-0.

The Lions were in good form playing some exciting stuff for new coach Alan Murray who was celebrating again when after 8 minutes Parkinson found his way over for his 2nd of the game after minutes. Briers goaled again  and Swinton lead 12-0.

Keighley came back into the contest after 24 minutes when George Flanagan crashed over by the posts to half their lead with a goal from Izac Farrell.

Keighley has the momentum at this point and Swinton had to battle hard, fortunately for Swinton they came up with a sucker punch as Fullback Louise Roberts direct from a scrum extended their lead after 33 minutes. Briers goaled again and the lions lead 18-6.

Keighley kept pushing to get back into the contest just before half time but some heroic lions defence kept the score to 18-6 at the break.

The 2nd half start very well for the lions as Tom Rachford showed the Keighley defence a clean pair of heels to score with a 50m break. The conversion attempt was missed and the lions lead 22-6.

Unfortunately for Swinton Keighley started to claw their way back into the contest with Dee Foggin Johnson scoring after 46 minutes and Oliver Whitford after a hour.
Both conversions were missed and the score was 22-14 Swinton.

It was a see saw contest as both sides looked for a knock out blow. With 10 minutes to go Keighley cranked the pressure on the lions when Oliver Whitford got his 2nd of the game. The conversion was missed and the score was 22-18.

In the dying  moments  of the game with the hooter about to sound Keighley moved the ball wide and despite some heroics from the lions scored with the last play of the game though Oli Whitford dived over for his hatrick to break the lion’s hearts.

Despite the draw the lions faithful will be encouraged by Alan Murray’s processes which he has installed in the team and their 1st win can’t be too far away.
