Hunslet 22 Salford 12 Match report
Salford RLFC travelled to Hunslet looking to do a league double over their opposition unfortunately they were unable to reproduce the heroics from earlier in the season and went down to defeat, the 1st time Hunslet have beaten Salford in the league since 1966.
It was a cloudy day in Hunslet as a good following of Salford fans who made their way over the Pennines. Danny Lynch started in the front row in the place of Cameron Bate, Brad Dwyer started at hooker with Joe Baldwin and loan signing Alfie Leake on the interchange bench.
Salford started brightly looking for the early score unfortunately it was Hunslet who open the scoring after 10 minutes as Salford were pressing putting pressure on Hunslet a long Toby Hughes pass was intercepted by Mo Ogorro who raced down the field, the defensive cover came across but it was unable to prevent Billy Jowett going over the line in the other corner in traffic, he covered his own try and Salford trailed 6-0
Hunslet doubled their lead after 22 minutes another error in mid field, the ball was hacked on by Hunslet picked up by Charlie Graham who held off the retreating Salford defence and fed Dan Abram to score from 40m. Jowett converted again and Salford trailed 12-0
Salford were still in the contest and were asking questions of Hunslet, they were rewarded after 27 minutes when a Toby Hughes kick near the line sat up nicely for Jack Bibby to score, the conversion was good by Kieran Dixon and Salford were back in the contest at 12-6.
Unfortunately for Salford on 30 minutes Hunslet extended their lead, a good break by ex Salford player Myles Harrop caused panic in the Salford defence and kick by Dan Abrham was not dealt with allowing Sam Smeaton to pick up and score.
Salford had some late pressure pressure in the 1st half, a Brad Dwyer kick caused a knock on by Billy Jowett under his own posts and Some good hands by Toby Hughes could not get Salford over the line for a crucial score. The hooter sounded and Dave Hewitt's men went into the sheds at half time trailing 18-6.
The 2nd half started in a scruffy fashion as both sides knocked the ball on early in their sets, Salford built some pressure and a kick to the corner by Brad Dwyer caused the Salford faithful to rise to their feet Salford winger Callum Green looked certain to score, unfortunately the ball bounced and ran dead.
After 49 minutes of the game a crucial try, good work by Hunslet stand off and former Red Lee Gaskell found some space on the outside and produced a perfectly timed kick for Harrop who collected the ball 10 yards out beating Jacob Douglas to score. The conversion was missed and Hunslet were on a roll.
Gaskells boot was coming more into the game as another kick from him this time a high bomb caused chaos in the Salford defence luckily a knock on was judged and Colin Wiby score was wiped out.
Salford's chances of a comeback started to evaporate on 64 minutes as Toby Hughes was lead from the field after a huge hit by Eddie Battye, Hughes did not return and may be a doubt for next weeks game against Workington.
Owain Able came off the bench and moved into the half back position and started to get Salford moving, 10 minutes to go Salford looked to post points after Shaun Costello who was impressive again, teased the Hunslet defence on two occasions with a hit and spin action 10m from the line. This resulted in a offload and quick hands from Salford's back division unfortunately on both occasions the ball went down and the half chance went away
On the other side of the field Oli Garmston and Owen Abel had the Hunslet defence on high alert with some strong flowing rugby but unfortunately the final passes didn't quite hit its target on a couple of occasions.
Salford did score the final try of the game as Salford stretched the Hunslet defence a long pass by Brad Dwyer found Callum Green who squeezed over in the corner. Dixon goaled again
The final hooter went shortly after and Salford returned to Lancashire without the points.
Salford never really got going in the game and despite some huge efforts in midfield Salford didnt quite have the attacking know how to break down a tough Hunslet.
After the game in the press conference Dave Hewitt did say he felt that we had left a lot of points out of the field by not taking our chances. I tend to agree with him, a frustrating day but the journey we are on as a club and as a team we will have these days. I'm sure the boys will take a lot from this going forward for the rest of the season.
Salford RLFC will hope to get back to winning ways as they welcom Workington to The Copaq on Sunday.
