Salford RLFC 4 London Broncos 62 Match report

 


It was another glorious Sunny day at the Corpacq as Salford faced off against the London Broncos. Before the game it was announced that Marc Sneyd will rejoin the club for the 2027 season on a two year deal, the crowd stood as one and celebrated this fantastic news.

 It was a changed line up for Salford RLFC as a couple of long term absentees got back onto the field with Winger Jack Holmes and and Forward Charlie Glover taking their place back in the starting 17 which boosted Dave Hewitt's squad ahead of the contest.

London opened the scoring after 6 minutes when 2nd row forward Luke Smith cut though the Salford defence to score, London smelt blood and doubled their lead when good hands sent Centre Robert Mathias over for his 1st score, Fullback James Meadows converted one and missed one and it was 0-10 to London after 11 minutes.

From the restart a knock on by former Salford winger Neil Tchamambe Djeukam who was on loan last season from Wakefield knocked the ball on, Unfortunately Salford were unable to capitalise on the error in front of the South Stand and the chance of scoring past.


London got back on the front foot and a good break by Fullback James Meadows allowed Luke Smith to collect a grubber kick to score his 2nd of the game, Meadows added the extra points and the scoreboard tipped drastically towards London after 20 minutes.

The Salford supporters who stood by their team though out the full 80 minutes were frustrated when Finley Glare cut though the Salford defence after a potential knock on was not spotted by the referee to extend their lead to 22 points with conversion by James Meadows.

For the next 10 minutes the game turned into a arm wrestle with both sides in the grind as the heat continued to rise both on and off the field at the Copacq.

A error by London forward Emely Bitungaine gave Salford RLFC a opportunity as Joe Baldwin went close, a kick by Owain Abel was kicked dead by Tchamambe Djeukam. Salford put more pressure on the London defence but unfortunate Cole Oakley lost the ball in collision after some aggressive London defence and the danger went away.

Errors were creeping into the Salford game at this point with a penalty kick giving London territory again, a good cover tackle by Charlie Glover and Winger Callum Green forced a error and Salford once again came forward looking to score points.

Good work by Kieran Dixon gave Salford some momentum, Salford testing the edge defence of London Broncos but good pressure by London forced a Oli Garmston pass out of play on half way.

Just before half time Robert Mathias found as way though the Salford defence to extend their lead on the hooter, James Meadow converted and the Broncos lead by 28 points at half time.

The 2nd half started badly for Salford a error from the restart giving Marcos Stock opportunity to pounced on the bouncing ball to score. London had momentum  again and looked dangerous  Finley  stepping though the Salford defence to score after 55 minutes.

London Centre Robert Mathias completed his hat trick scoring in the corner after some dangerous attacking play by London, James Meadows converted. Luke Smith completed his hat trick racing away from 40m to score to bring up the half century with 25 minutes to play. Meadows converted again it was 0-52. and Jack Croft finished off a flowing move for the Broncos to register another try which the dogged defence from Salford could not prevent.

A knock on by London gave Salford territory and Owain Abel weaved his way nearly over the line, London's defence was creaking and Salford were building in confidence but yet again London had enough in their defence to stop Salford scoring at this point.


Good work by Able again and grubber kick created panic in the London Broncos defence which resulted in a dropout, Salford RLFC came forward again looking to score a try. Toby Hughes went close but at the next play of the ball a looping pass from Brad Dwyer found Winger Callum Green who scored in the corner, a much deserved try after all the hard work put in by Dave Hewitt's men against a strong London Broncos.

Kieran Dixon missed the conversion but Salford were on the score sheet 4-56. Kieran Dixon made up for the failed conversion moments later tracking and tackling Tchamabe Djeukam into touch as he looked to score another try for London with 5 mins to go.

Salford pushed for another score late on with good work by Abel, Hartley and Dwyer but yet again the London Broncos defence stood firm.

A late try by Robert Mathias his fourth of the game was the cherry on the cake for the Broncos.

Salford have come a long way this season and a home defeat against the only professional team in the division will not define our season, there was some drop ball and loose play at times during the game but with all the pressure there was no batting collapse from Dave Hewitt's men.

They made London work for every point and as a Supporter that makes us proud of the players efforts today.

Widnes away on Friday night is the next game to look forward too.

 Anyone on the Widnes side who thought that the newly formed Salford Ladies team would be an easy take in Sundays opening league fixture at the home of the Halton Hornets amateur side must have had to amend their expectations quite rapidly as the game started to unfold in the most surprising of manners.
