Widnes 52 Salford 8 Match report

 

Salford travelled to Widnes looking to get back to Winning ways after last weeks home defeat against London, Owain Able was a noticeable absentee from Dave Hewitt's starting 17 with Callum Green slotting into Scrum half position. Keane Gilford and Jack Homes were on the wings for Salford and Sadiq Ayanlaja Lowo made his debut for the club off the bench.

A Solid start for both teams in the 1st 5 minutes Widnes made a half break but as the ball went to ground it was kicked dead and Salford brought the ball away Salford Centre Joe Hartley had Salford's 1st opportunity, Widnes were on the attack approaching Salford 20 metre line a long ball he intercepted and raced away after 10 minutes but the ref had judged that knock on had took place much to his disbelief as he walked back into his space in the defensive line.


From the resulting scrum Salford gave away a penalty for interference at the play of the ball and Widnes took advantage as prop forward and former Salford player Dan Murray crashed over by the posts. Another former Salford player Danny Richardson who wore our Red last season on loan kicked the conversion and Widnes lead 6-0 after 11 minutes.

Salford pressed straight from kick off with Brad Dwyer shooting out of the line trying to force a error, unfortunately the ball bounced off Jack Homes, Widnes survived that scare but Salford were getting a foot hold in the game as Toby Hughes peppered the Widnes backline with attacking kicks.

A break by Oli Garmston had the Salford fans on their feet, Jack Homes was taken out by a Widnes defender which resulted in a penalty, Brad Dwyer was held up over the line but the next tackle a kick though by Salford standoff Toby Hughes allowed Forward Cole Oakley to collect and score by the posts.

Kieron Dixon missed the conversion and Salford trailed 6-4 with 20 minutes gone.



Widnes got back in front after a strong run by Jordan Johnson gave them field position, Dan Murray went close again but after a good move Widnes scored, Winger Mike Butt putting the ball down. Danny Richardson converted the try and Widnes lead 12-4.A high tackle on Kieron Dixon gave Salford a penalty which gave them opportunity, After some good attacking play a good kick by Brad Dwyer and chase by Joe Hartley forced a drop out.

Lovely work from the resulting set of six by Dwyer, Hughes and Joe Baldwin sent winger Jack Homes into the corner. Dixon missed the conversion and Salford trailed 12-8 after 30 minutes.

5 minutes before the break Widnes scored a crucial try, a strong run down the field sucked in the Salford defence allowing Danny Richardson to feed Frank Sergeant who scrambled over in the corner Another conversion by Richardson and Widnes lead 16-8.


Salford steam forward looking to get a try before half time, Oli Garmson went close as wave after wave of Salford attacks came forward Salford forced a drop out as the seconds ticked towards half time, a strong run by Cole Appleby gave Salford position but unfortunately they were unable to get over the line on half time as the hooter sounded.

Dave Hewitts men knew they needed to get a early score to get back in the contest unfortunately a knock on then a loose pass put Salford on the back foot, it gave Widnes possession deep in Salford territory early in the half and they got their reward when Matty Fozzard dived over for the score. The conversion by Danny Richardson was good and the game started to slide away from Salford at 22-8.

A fracas from kick off spiced up the action on the field.. and got the atmosphere going in the stands

Salford battled hard at this point and were in the arm wrestle with Widnes, A Brad Dwyer kick caused confusion in the Widnes result which resulted in another drop out, Unfortunately Widnes got the ball back from the drop out and Salford's chance went away.


Widnes scored shortly after a grubber kick caught Salford napping and Jack Billington collected, Richardson goaled and it was 28-8 Widnes with 57 minutes played.

Brad Dwyer and Toby Hughes tried to inspire Salford into life but unfortunately the bounce of the ball favoured Widnes as a kick to the corner had Salford back peddling and Winger Frank Sergeant was alert enough to catch and score, 34-8 as Richardson converted again.

Widnes rolled forward again, Salford desperately defended a powerful run by Jack Houghton to prevent him from scoring, unfortunately a towering kick caused more problems for Salford, the ball bounced to Keiron Taylor who scored . 40-8 Widnes 12 minutes to go.

Former Podcast player of the year Nathan Connell scored a 50 metre try for the Vikings to keep the scoreboard ticking over . 46-8



Connell made another break shortly after and fed Jack Owens to score under the posts 52-8

Despite defeat the Salford fans who had made the trip to Widnes remained partisan, cheering their team on after every tackle. The hooter sounded and the game ended in defeat for Salford.

A week off for Dave Hewitt's men as they prepare for the big derby game against Swinton Lions.

 Anyone on the Widnes side who thought that the newly formed Salford Ladies team would be an easy take in Sundays opening league fixture at the home of the Halton Hornets amateur side must have had to amend their expectations quite rapidly as the game started to unfold in the most surprising of manners.
