St Helens v Salford Match report

Devil In The Detail SRD · Pride in defeat, ladies record their 1st league win as trips to Merseyside for both loom large   That’s just the way it is! Somethings will never change. That’s just the way it is! But don’t you believe them! Forty two years of hurt at St.Helens came mighty close to ending last night in a match where not many people expected it to. Salford we’re struggling with quite a fair few players missing from injury. Even the most optimistic supporters didn’t see this performance coming! The Red Devils came out with a fearless attitude. This seemed to stun the hosts who perhaps underestimated Paul Rowley’s side.  Both sides went toe to toe in the early stages with defences being very solid. Salford we’re determined and didn’t seem at all fazed by the fantastic side in front of them. Saints are a champion team that have everything in bucket loads. Salford matched them in every department. Every player did his job. The work ethic if you could bottle it would be absolute

St Helens v Salford Big Match Preview

Devil In The Detail SRD · Danny Orr and Christ Bates Coaches Corner    I think I said in the match report on Sunday that Rugby League can be a cruel game. Salford have everything in that second half against only to be pipped by some brilliance at the end by Jai Field who is a super player. The sport can be pretty brutal at times too. Salford’s squad was already decimated by injuries and to add to that Ryan Brierley picked up a nasty rib injury and Elijah Taylor failed his head assessment. These too will both miss this Fridays match with St.Helens. It’s been a difficult few weeks for the Red Devils but Sundays effort will give the players confidence and despite the defeat brighter days lie ahead. Hopefully some of the injured players will start returning. Next weekend the team will get a rest when the Challenge Cup Semi finals take place. This will surely help the players rest up and re charge the batteries for the two home games coming up in May. The away fixture at St Helens hasn’t

keighley Cougars V Swinton Lions Match report

Devil In The Detail SRD · 5th April Sportszone Salford City Radio  Swinton Lions suffered their 2nd defeat of the season traveling to Keighley Cougars on Sunday.   Ill discipline was a factor for the Lions early in the contest, Keighley took advantage with a penalty after 3 minutes,  Swinton started to try and create some chances but the pressure faded away and so did Swinton's chances of taking the points back to Greater Manchester. Keighley were dangerous in patches, Scott Murrell created a opportunity with a kick, this allowed Lewis Young space to score and this give Keighley a eight Pont lead., In the 14 minute Cougars star Jack Millar crashed over and with the kick successful a strugging Swinton trailed by 14 points. 28 minutes into this contest Swinton had their 1st opportunity with Jose Kenga going close, unfortunately some fantastic Keighley defence and wrong decisions in attack allowed Keighley to move away from their try line, 3 minutes before half time Keighley's M

Salford Red Devils ladies v Warrington Lunas Match Report

Devil In The Detail SRD · Coaches Corner with Paul Rowley and Dawn Schofield  Salford Red Devils ladies started their 1st ever league campaign with a impressive away day win against Warrington Lunas at Victoria Park. Lucy Mckeown continued her run at fullback, Salford handed a debut to Great Britain Teachers Centre Alex Simpson, Megan Condliffe returned after missing the Featherstone victory to boost Christ Bates pack. Warrington started well and put Salford under pressure from the 1st whistle and were rewarded when they opened the scoring. After weathering the initial Warrington storm Salford found some rythm, good work by Demi Jones and Kayleigh Bradshaw sent Luci Mckeown in for the equalising try. Jones kicked her 1st goal of the game and the game was tied at  6-6. Alex Simpson who stared for the GB teachers early in the month showed all of her class collecting a pass from Mckeown after another runaround move by Jones and Bradshaw caused panic in the wire defence. The conversion by

Devil In The Detail SRD · Easter with cracked eggs and The Warriors are next   It was a glorious sunny Sunday lunchtime as the players walked out for kick off. A stiff breeze blew across the pitch but on the whole it was perfect playing conditions for Rugby League.  Salford coach Paul Rowley had to make changes to the team after Monday’s defeat to Catalans and they were forced due to injuries. Chris Atkin slotted into the halves for Marc Sneyd. Kallum Watkins started in the second row after a very impressive match last time out. Greg Burke and Morgan Escare made the seventeen with Sitaleki Akauola and Josh Johnson missing out. After a nervy start from the home side they eventually began to settle. Jai Field showed lightning quick pace to sprint through a gap after good quick hands on the Warriors right edge. Field got the try with young half back Harry Smith adding the conversion. Matty Costello came close to scoring for Salford when it looked odds on a try. Wigan desperately defend

Wigan v Salford Big Match preview

Devil In The Detail SRD · Coaches Corner with Paul Rowley and Dawn Schofield It was a disappointing Easter for Salford and the supporters. Two defeats away at Warrington and home to Catalans and not much really to shout about. After victories in the first two matches of the season Salford have now won just one out of the last seven games. With two consecutive away fixtures coming up against Wigan and St.Helens things aren’t looking any easier.  One thing that we can be positive about on Easter Monday was the return of a Kallum Watkins after a very lengthy injury layoff. Kallum played as a make shift back rower and real impressed. His hardworking display definitely earned him his post match Pizza that seems to be a tradition these days. He looked sharp and you would expect in the coming weeks he will get better with is a real boost for the squad.  Salford supporters and the club in general never seem to mention injuries. We just crack on with the job in hand. At the moment though the

SALFORD 10 CATALAN 36 MATCH REPORT

Devil In The Detail SRD · Wakefield and looking for Easter Egg-cellent performance on Thursday Salford had been craving a good start to a match for quite a while. In their second match of Easter they got just that. With four minutes on the clock Ryan Brierley for the second week running measured a perfect kick. Deon Cross collected the ball to score a nice try. Marc Sneyd converted 6-0. Salford’s lead didn’t last long though. Some good ball movement from the Dragons opened Salford up. Young centre Matthieu Laguerre crossed for a try which Arthur Mourgue converted to level the score. The hosts were again frustrated giving away penalties and set restarts which put them firmly on the back foot. The Dragons forced a drop out and the pressure told late in the set as Salford conceded another penalty. The visitors opted to run it and the gamble paid off when winger Tom Davies went over. The Red Devils again looked vulnerable on the edges and this was easily exploited. Andy Ackers shot out

Salford Red Devils v Catalan Dragons Big Match preview Bank Holiday Monday

Image
Devil In The Detail SRD · Wakefield and looking for Easter Egg-cellent performance on Thursday   The eagerly anticipated Easter schedule got under way on Thursday evening for Salford and Catalans. Both sides failed to impress with Salford beaten comfortably away at Warrington while the Dragons laboured to victory over Toulouse in a bad tempered match in Perpignan.  Once again Salford conceded a substantial lead in the first half trailing 16-0 just before the break. Ken Sio’s try right on half time gave the away supporters a little glimmer of hope for the second half but once again the Red Devils were second best. The first all French Super League encounter finished 18-10 to the Dragons. Steve McNamara’s side currently sit in second place on the League table just two points behind leaders St.Helens. Salford have slipped down to tenth with three wins from eight matches so far. Since the Dragons joined the Super League in 2006 Salford have had the upper hand for the majority of the ti

Devil In The Detail SRD · Wakefield and looking for Easter Egg-cellent performance on Thursday The Easter festival of Rugby League got under way on Thursday night with a number of fixtures in the Super League. Salford made the short trip down the A57 or M62 to Warrington. The Wolves had lost five games on the trot and were desperately seeking a performance. On the other hand Salford were struggling to string a decent eighty minutes together. The Red Devils had showed patches of good spells in recent weeks but were on a slight decline with some very testing matches coming up over the next month. Salford made a bright start to the match as they were cheered on by a good vocal away following behind the posts. It was a defensive clock off that let the Wolves in for the opening points. Toby King ran at a huge gap to coast in for an easy try.  The hosts cranked the pressure up pummelling the Salford line with a real ferociousness. The Red Devils dug deep and scrambled well to hold out.

Warrington v Salford Big Match Preview Easter Thursday

Image
Devil In The Detail SRD · Wakefield and looking for Easter Egg-cellent performance on Thursday Over the years I’ve always thought Warrington are a bit like Salford being a real enigma. You never quite know what your going to get. This season the Wolves seem an even bigger one than Salford. Since moving to their new Stadium Warrington have enjoyed good success in the Challenge Cup with trips to Wembley. Pair that with plenty of top four finishes and a few Grand Final appearances to lift the club alongside some of the sports big hitters.  Warrington last won Rugby League’s top flight Championship in 1955 and their supporters are craving a League Title. At the start of 2022 with plenty of investment in the playing squad as well as a very experienced coach joining the club in Daryl Powell expectation was probably higher than its ever been in this part of Cheshire. For one reason or another the players have struggled for form crashing out of the Challenge Cup at home to Wakefield Trinit

Doncaster 22 Swinton Lions 64 Match report

Image
Devil In The Detail SRD · Sportszone 22nd March Salford City Radio Swinton Lions made it 3 wins from 3 games after another impressive away performance. Early pressure from Swinton had Doncaster on the back foot and the Lions opened the scoring. A creative team move sent Jayden Hatten over for the opening score of the day. Dan Abriham kicked the conversion and Swinton lead 6-0 after 3 minutes. Doncaster were unable to control the ball and Swinton took full advantage when Max Roberts found space to score Abriham made it 2 conversions  for them and the lions were up by 12 points. 10 minutes into the game Doncaster came back into the contest, the ball was moved wide to Tom Halliday who showed good pace and know how cross. The  deficit was 8 points. Both teams were in the arm wrestle but Swinton were next to add for rhe scoreboard, Luke Waterworth who impressed throughout sent Louis Brogain over for a score Things went from bad to worse when Ben Johnson was sent off for dissent for Doncas

Midland Hurricanes 16 Swinton Lions 54 Match report

Devil In The Detail SRD · Sportszone 15th March Salford City Radio Swinton Lions made it two wins in two games after a big win away at Midland Hurricanes. Swinton opened the scoring after 6 minutes when Prop forward Deane Meadows burst the Midlands defence wide open for 1st score for The Lions. Swinton who have found their attack mojo doubled their lead 4 minutes later after forcing a goaline drop out Louis Brogan forced his way over. Swinton Lions 12 points up Allan Coleman was happy. 15 minutes into the game Swinton were dominant, another pressure induced 10 metre restart Dan Abram showed a touch of class to collect a pass and go over for Swinton. It was on 20 minutes when Midland Hurricanes had their 1st moment of pressure, it resulted in a try by Ben Stead who went in by the posts to peg back Swinton, 18 points to 6 the game was still in the balance. All Midland’s good work was undone however when they were reduced to 12 men with Tyler Walten was put in the sin bin for punching a

Wakefield v Salford Match report

Devil In The Detail SRD · Mixed results in the cup, Reds go stateside as Wakefield are on the horizon   Salford arrived in West Yorkshire above Wakefield in the table, however they faced an ever improving Trinity side brimming with confidence.  It was a fine afternoon as the game kicked off with quite a chilly breeze blowing. Both sides traded sets in the early stages and completed well as the match ebbed and flowed. Salford seemed to be targeting the Trinity left side where Tom Johnstone was on the wing. This would prove a mistake, Johnstone had a wonderful first half and was indeed the difference between the two sides. His pace and power were a lethal combination and helped set the first try of the match up from a nice pass from young centre Corey Hall. Jacob Miller backed up well to wow the home crowd in the eight minute.  Salford’s response was imminent though with Welsh winger Rhys Williams squeezing in the corner from good ball distribution from hooker Andy Ackers.
